Communicable Disease: a type of infectious disease that is easily spread from person-to-person and therefore readily “caught” from an infected person. The reportable communicable diseases have the potential to cause significant illness and / or death. Influenza, measles, and chlamydia are examples of communicable diseases.
There are 88 infectious and communicable diseases that Title 17 California Code of regulations requires local health departments to report. The surveillance of these diseases by public health departments helps to determine which diseases are causing illness in the community, and which groups are most impacted by them. With this information, local health departments can make decisions on the best ways to prevent the spread of disease and evaluate the success of prevention programs.
